Gaybarzine 5.5.07

Playlist mit David Schneider zu Gast bei Rocketoire (Redakteur und Kameramann des Gaybarzine aus BL):

Info...

"This paper is about “youth” resistance and its street pedagogy. While recognizing the importance of other subcultures (such as Hip Hop for example), we focus on PunKore scenes because of our personal experiences and knowledge of them, having been participants for the past 20 years.
The arguments herein deal with PunKore’s specific street pedagogical practices (as we understand and know them) that have changed lives, rendering it part of a potentially-revolutionary force capable of dismantling the social relationships that lead to “the capitalization of humanity.”

In this paper we, first, discuss youth resistance as it relates to extant advanced stages of global capital. Next, we outline what we think the essences of the most revolutionary aspects of PunKore pedagogy have been and continue to be. Social mobilization, organizing on multiple social issues and the materialization of concrete political actions, via the PunKore scene, are exposed throughout the paper. Furthermore we also focus on what could be labeled as counter revolutionary tendencies of the PunKore scene. Finally, we outline what the pedagogical practices of these PunKore scenes of human resistance mean for us in terms of our lived praxis and emancipatory possibilities."

Black Invisibility and Racism in Punk Rock

"I seriously doubt the issue of racism and invisibility in punk will ever be resolved, much like the issue of racism in society. I just want it to be known that although punk rock claims to be fighting the larger war, it must first win its own internal battle before any progress will be made."

Radikalität ist Chic: The Death Of The Cool!

Sein Aufsehen erregender Debütroman THE COCKA HOLA COMPANY erschien 2003 erstmals in deutscher Sprache.

Simon Reynolds on Post Punk

http://members.aol.com/blissout/postpunk.htm

About his Book
"RIP IT UP COMPILATION OUT NOW ON V2: LINK

unk's raw power rejuvenated rock, but by summer 1977 it had become a parody of itself. Rip It Up and Start Again: Postpunk 1978-84 is a celebration of what happened next--bands like Joy Division, Gang of Four, Wire, Contortions, Talking Heads, The Fall, Cabaret Voltaire, The Human League--who dedicated themselves to fulfilling punk's unfinished musical revolution. Based on over 125 interviews, Rip It Up offers a panoramic survey of the seven year period following punk, taking in everything from PIL to ABC to SST to ZTT, and dealing with genres including industrial, 2-Tone, synthpop, and goth. The UK edition, published by Faber & Faber, is OUT NOW and available from amazon.co.uk and other UK online booksellers. The American edition will be published by Penguin in March 2006."

Riot Grrrl Artikel

http://www.trust-zine.de/aktuell/RiotGrrrls116.htm

Raw POP statt Post Punk

Note: mit dem Begriff Postpunk beziehe ich mich in erster Linie auf die Bands: Television; Richard Hell, Joy Division, Gang of Four und Iggy Pop (Teil meiner Musiksammlung).

Pop is still Pop, is still Pop, is still Pop und lässt sich nicht durch den Begriff PUNK ersetzten.

(Ladys of all genders)

"There were a lot of women in the beginning. It (the Punk Movement) was women doing things. Then it became this whole macho, anti-women thing. Then women didn't go to see punk bands anymore because they were afraid of getting killed. I didn't even go because it was so violent and so macho that it was repulsive. Women just got squeezed out".

Jennifer Miro, "The Nuns", commenting on what she saw happening towards the end of 1977.

Vegan Fun in the Postpunkkitchen

That is a very intersting platform I have just found on the web. What I find very appealing is the fact that this site does not have that sort of: biased dark and hardcore image. Instead it seems very coulourful and rookyfriendly.

Very interesting recipies for vegans and, of course, non-vegans:-)

"Hola!

Welcome to the Post Punk Kitchen.

We are a public access vegan cooking show, currently on haitus but we'll be back, promise! In the meantime you can watch the show on Google Video.

We've always loved cooking shows but they tend to be gross. So we thought it would be nice if there was something watchable for vegetarians. And people who may not have fancy accoutrement. (Please say that word in a french canadian accent because it's funnier that way)."

The Bell Jar

In Flappergathering 1 (Belgium Riot Grrrlszine) I read that "The Bell Jar" (1963) by Sylvia Plath is supposed to have influenced the writings of Courtney Love, Kate Bjelland of Babes in Toyland, and the members of Bikini Kill.

I have not read it yet but you can get a description on SPARKNOTES:

"Context
The Bell Jar is an autobiographical novel that conforms closely to the events of the author’s life. Sylvia Plath was born to Otto and Aurelia Plath in 1932 and spent her early childhood in the seaport town of Winthrop, Massachusetts. Otto Plath died when Plath was eight years old, and she moved with her mother, younger brother, and maternal grandparents to Wellesley, an inland suburb of Boston. Plath excelled in school and developed a strong interest in writing and drawing. In 1950, she won a scholarship to attend Smith College, where she majored in English. The Bell Jar recounts, in slightly fictionalized form, the events of the summer and autumn after Plath’s junior year. Like Esther, the protagonist of The Bell Jar, Plath was invited to serve as guest editor for a woman’s magazine in New York. After returning to Wellesley for the remainder of the summer, she had a nervous breakdown and attempted suicide.
Plath went on to complete a highly successful college career. She won the prestigious Fulbright scholarship to study at Cambridge University in England, where she met the English poet Ted Hughes. They married in 1956, and after a brief stint in the United States, where Plath taught at Smith, they moved back to England in 1959. Plath gave birth to her first child, Freda, the following year. The same year, she published The Colossus, her first volume of poetry. Her second child, Nicholas, was born in 1962. Hughes and Plath separated shortly afterward; her instability and his affair with another woman had placed great strain on their marriage. Plath and her children moved to a flat in London, where she continued to write poetry. The poems she wrote at this time were later published in a collection titled Ariel (1965). In February 1963, she gassed herself in her kitchen, ending her life at the age of thirty-one.
Plath most likely wrote a first draft of The Bell Jar in the late 1950s. In 1961 she received a fellowship that allowed her to complete the novel. The Bell Jar was published in London in January 1963 under the pseudonym Victoria Lucas. Plath chose to publish the work under a pseudonym in order to protect the people she portrayed in the novel, and because she was uncertain of the novel’s literary merit. The novel appeared posthumously in England under her own name in 1966, and in America, over the objections of her mother, in 1971. The Bell Jar has received moderate critical acclaim, and has long been valued not only as a glimpse into the psyche of a major poet, but as a witty and harrowing American coming-of-age story. Plath is primarily known not as a novelist, but as an outstanding poet. Ariel cemented her reputation as a great artist. Her other volumes of poetry, published posthumously, include Crossing the Water (1971), Winter Trees (1971), and The Collected Poems (1981), which won the Pulitzer Prize.
Sylvia Plath’s literary persona has always provoked extreme reactions. Onlookers tend to mythologize Plath either as a feminist martyr or a tragic heroine. The feminist martyr version of her life holds that Plath was driven over the edge by her misogynist husband, and sacrificed on the altar of pre-feminist, repressive 1950s America. The tragic heroine version of her life casts Plath as a talented but doomed young woman, unable to deal with the pressures of society because of her debilitating mental illness. Although neither myth presents a wholly accurate picture, truth exists in both. The Bell Jar does not label its protagonist’s life as either martyred or heroic. Plath does not attribute Esther’s instability to men, society, or Esther herself, although she does criticize all three. Rather, she blames mental illness, which she characterizes as a mysterious and horrific disease"(http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/belljar/).

About Greil Marcus-scholarly literature on rockmusic

"American music critic and journalist, Greil Marcus changed the face of rock criticism with his books "Mystery Train" (1975) and "Lipstick Traces" (1989) which placed rock and roll in American folk history and western civilization, respectively. He is the author of many books on rock music and pop culture, including "Dead Elvis: A Chronicle of a Cultural Obsession" (1991) and "Like a Rolling Stone: Bob Dylan at the Crossroads" (2005). He was the first review editor at Rolling Stone and has been critic and columnist for Creem, the Village Voice and Artforum and a contributor to The New Yorker, The New York Times and Esquire. His latest book, "The Shape of Things to Come: Prophecy and the American Voice," was released in September."

Cultures do not have the ability to evolve, renew or survive automatically. They should be preserved and kept alive through vitalization of the cultural life. To create this kind of vital atmosphere, it is increasingly necessary that the artists create and express themselves in a free and democratic environment both politically and culturally. It is the freedom of expression that evokes life quality in the society.

At the same time the old traditions must be preserved, it should also get updated and renovated by creating bridges and intersections to exceed all the existing boundaries between humans and their cultures, in order to create a multicultural society that is able to give birth and develop possibilities for the new and contemporary cultures and art forms that in it self creates new and exciting conditions and refreshing coexistence for the next upcoming generations that wants to live in a promising and vital cultural life. It only happens by creating different kinds of cultural platforms for dialogs and discussions. It is exactly what the new generation of musicians in Iran are missing, a stage to perform their abilities and promote their creativity.
The word "Zir Zamin" means "Underground" or "Basement".
zirzamin.se is an Iranian online music magazine and the project concept is to create a forum to connect the new wave of Iranian independent and underground musicians both inside and outside of Iran, to the Iranian public and the world through us.

zirzamin.se is the juncture where the public can hear and see our new youth popular culture. It is also an intersection where musicians may present their new material for review by other musicians as well as the public.

zirzamin.se is basically a stage where links are made; through us, the eyes and the ears of the world are only a link away.

Our purpose is to represent our Iranian Alternative Musician to the international music community and industry. This is the only reason that the dominating language on the magazine is in English instead of Persian. We also want to be a part of creating this new Iranian music scene and its new vital identity.

zirzamin.se is a stage for all the Iranian musicians with exceptional creative quality.

"Anyone can make the simple complicated.
Creativity is making the complicated simple."

Why Riot?

Behind the scenes the music industry which encompasses

record producers
record manufacturers
record labels
record distributors
A&R
band managers
tour promoters
bookers
roadies
etc.

tend to be male dominated and \"steered\" by men while women serve rather representational functions; they still exert comparatively little influence on crucial decisions. In addition to this women still make little use of networks when they are musicians (undergound), Djanes, dancers, graffiti writers, and producers. There are still music communities that rarely offer female fronted bands (Hip Hop, HC Punk, etc.).Thus we are starting a new Riot Grrrl Chapter to make people become more aware of this political and socio- economical issue. We want to encourage women to start their own networks of DJanes, dancers, writers, singers, bands, labels, magazines, radio shows, magazine editors etc.

What it means to be a djane.

Most importantly, to be a Djane in a club means to serve as a role- model for other women. You are the "piece of evidence" that shows that women can handle an amplifier, the faders, the bass. You can motivate other women to become active mebers of the music scene. When you can make people dance you have proved that you are emphatic and that that you are good at observing and analysing people´s tastes. What is also an intersting element of DJ-janing is the fact, that you can introduce new music and keep the balance between female/male music.

Kill Rock Stars- a philosophy:

"Unlike all major labels and many indie labels, profit is not our primary motivation. Kill Rock Stars is dedicated to releasing high quality meaningful recordings in a manner that is fair and respectful to the artists. The system that makes rock stars wants us to believe that we have no choices except the handful they give us but they don't even bother to give us good choices, just lame ones. KRS just wants to give you some good stuff to listen to that actually means something to counteract the empty and boring stuff you see on TRL or whatever."

"Kill Rock Stars joins millions of other Americans (you know who you are!) in our condemnation of "H. J. Res 114 - Authorization for the Use of Military Force Against Iraq" and our pledge to resist and protest the impending stupid and immoral invasion of Iraq. Please let us know what is happening in your town to stop or protest this war, and we will post information we receive here, so some of your neighbors can find out and help."

Craig O´Hara:- The Philosophy of Punk

Punkwriting-Zinedistro

"Anyone can make the simple complicated.
Creativity is making the complicated simple."
– Charles Mingus-

http://zinedistro.de/

    Riot Grrrls background Info

"EVERY GRRRL IS A RIOT GRRRL. All you need is a healthy dose of pissed-offness at the treatment of womyn in our society. We are NOT all punk, all white, all lesbians, all musicians / zine editors / vegetarians [vegans] / victims of abuse / straight edge. There is no “stereotypical” Riot Grrrl. And there is no “hierarchy.” You don’t need our permission to be an “official” Riot Grrrl. You don’t need us to set up an “official” Riot Grrrl chapter. "

    (Soccio, as quoted at http://fllc.smu.edu/staffpages/hanna/grrrl.txt)"

About Riot Grrrl/What Is Riot Grrrl?

"HISTORY OF RIOT GRRRL Here is some history of riot grrrl. Riot Grrrl began in 1991 at Olympia Washington, when a few girls (mostly from Bikini Kill and Bratmobile) decided to get together and talk about their main interests: feminism and punk rock. The first time they met it was all fun; they put up posters to get attention of other open minded girls. Then they found out they had other things in common: they were all vegetarians; against drugs; and had been molested as children. At one meeting a very smart girl took notes, photocopied them and turned them into a cool fanzine. That's how it all began. Some people think that Bikini Kill started it all, in my eyes they did. Bikini Kill however does not think of themselves as starting the riot grrrl movement. In Bikini Kill's songs, they sing about different women issues such as: rape, incest, & other issues that some women face. Some people think that bikini kill, riot grrrls, and feminists are 'man-haters'. They're not. They just want to be equal to men, not better to them. Zines are a BIG part of the riot grrrl scene. Most riot grrrls believe in DIY (Do it yourself). That means that they start chapters, zines, etc. of their own around the riot grrrl movement."

BECAUSE us girls crave records and books and fanzines that speak to US that WE feel included in and can understand in our own ways.

BECAUSE we wanna make it easier for girls to see/hear each other's work so that we can share strategies and criticize-applaud each other.

BECAUSE we must take over the means of production in order to create our own moanings.

BECAUSE viewing our work as being connected to our girlfriends-politics-real lives is essential if we are gonna figure out how we are doing impacts, reflects, perpetuates, or DISRUPTS the status quo.

BECAUSE we recognize fantasies of Instant Macho Gun Revolution as impractical lies meant to keep us simply dreaming instead of becoming our dreams AND THUS seek to create revolution in our own lives every single day by envisioning and creating alternatives to the bullshit christian capitalist way of doing things.

BECAUSE we want and need to encourage and be encouraged in the face of all our own insecurities, in the face of beergutboyrock that tells us we can't play our instruments, in the face of "authorities" who say our bands/zines/etc are the worst in the US and

BECAUSE we don't wanna assimilate to someone else's (boy) standards of what is or isn't.

BECAUSE we are unwilling to falter under claims that we are reactionary "reverse sexists" AND NOT THE TRUEPUNKROCKSOULCRUSADERS THAT WE KNOW we really are.

BECAUSE we know that life is much more than physical survival and are patently aware that the punk rock "you can do anything" idea is crucial to the coming angry grrrl rock revolution which seeks to save the psychic and cultural lives of girls and women everywhere, according to their own terms, not ours.

BECAUSE we are interested in creating non-heirarchical ways of being AND making music, friends, and scenes based on communication + understanding, instead of competition + good/bad categorizations.

BECAUSE doing/reading/seeing/hearing cool things that validate and challenge us can help us gain the strength and sense of community that we need in order to figure out how bullshit like racism, able-bodieism, ageism, speciesism, classism, thinism, sexism, anti-semitism and heterosexism figures in our own lives.

BECAUSE we see fostering and supporting girl scenes and girl artists of all kinds as integral to this process.

BECAUSE we hate capitalism in all its forms and see our main goal as sharing information and staying alive, instead of making profits of being cool according to traditional standards.

BECAUSE we are angry at a society that tells us Girl = Dumb, Girl = Bad, Girl = Weak.

BECAUSE we are unwilling to let our real and valid anger be diffused and/or turned against us via the internalization of sexism as witnessed in girl/girl jealousism and self defeating girltype behaviors.

BECAUSE I believe with my wholeheartmindbody that girls constitute a revolutionary soul force that can, and will change the world for real.

The Riot Grrrl Movement began in the early 1990s by Washington State band Bikini Kill and lead singer Kathleen Hanna.
