Impressive People

Michele Wallace

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michele Faith Wallace (born January 4, 1952) is a feminist author and daughter of artist Faith Ringgold. She became famous in 1979 when, at age 27, she published Black Macho and The Myth of The Superwoman, a book in which she criticized black nationalism and sexism. [1] Her writings on literature, art, film, and popular culture have been widely published and have made her a "leader of a [new] generation of African-American intellectuals." [2] The cogency and insightfulness of Wallace's essays on visual culture and its relationship to race and gender is typified by "Modernism, Postmodernism and the Problem of the Visual in Afro-American Culture" and her afterword in the book Black Popular Culture (based on a groundbreaking conference organized by Wallace at The Studio Museum in Harlem in 1991): "Why Are There No Great Black Artists? The Problem of Visuality in African-American Culture". Her attention to the invisibility and/or fetishization of Black women in art, film, and television has inspired new critical thinking about race and gender in popular culture, particularly in what she has called "the gap around the psychoanalytic" in contemporary African-American critical discourse. Books like Black Macho and the Myth of the Superwoman, for example, have been a galvanizing and highly influential force in both African-American and feminist circles. [3] The real power of Wallace's writing--a commanding force evident in works as diverse as her essays on film and literature both for scholarly journals and popular essays, such as for the Village Voice--is a clarity and rigor that allows her to reach a broad and committed audience. Wallace earned her B.A. and M.A. in English from The City College of New York and has a Ph.D. in Cinema Studies from New York University. She is Professor of English at The City College and Graduate Center of the City University of New York.....

Erica Jong

A 1963 graduate of Barnard College, and with an M.A. in 18th century English Literature from Columbia University (1965), Jong is best known for her first novel, Fear of Flying (1973), which created a sensation with its frank treatment of a woman's sexual desires. Although it contains many sexual elements, the book is mainly the account of a young, hypersensitive woman, in her late twenties, trying to find who she is and where she is going. It contains many psychological, humorous, descriptive elements, and rich cultural and literary references. The book tries to answer the many conflicts arising in women in today's world, of womanhood, femininity, love, one's quest for freedom and purpose.

Jong wrote Fear of Flying in the first person, and her main character suffers from the fear of flying in more than one way, including the literal one. As her airline flight is taking off from New York on its way to Vienna, she says, "My fingers (and toes) turn to ice, my stomach leaps upward into my rib cage, the temperature in the tip of my nose drops to the same level as the temperature in my fingers, my nipples stand up and salute the inside of my bra (or in this case, dress--since I'm not wearing a bra)..." She created a new type of heroin

Gloria Marie Steinem

(born March 25, 1934) is an American feminist, journalist, and social and political activist.

Rising to national prominence as a feminist leader in 1969, Steinem was a columnist at New Yorkmagazine in the 1960s and broke ground in 1963 with an investigative report of how the women ofPlayboy were treated, which was made into the 1985 movie A Bunny's Tale. In the 1970s she became a leading political leader and one of the most important heads of the second-wave feminism, the women's rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s....

Angela Davis

Davis in October 2006

Angela Yvonne Davis (born January 26, 1944) is an American socialist, political activist and retired professor with the History of Consciousness Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She was the director of the university's Feminist Studies department.[1] Davis was a vocal activist during the Civil Rights Movement and a former Black Panther. Her research interests are in feminism, African American studies, critical theory, popular music culture and social consciousness, and philosophy of punishment and prisons.[2]

In the 1970s, she was a target of COINTELPRO, tried and acquitted of suspected involvement in the Soledad brothers' August 1970 abduction and murder of Judge Harold Haley in Marin County, California. She was twice a candidate for Vice President on the Communist Party USA ticket during the Reagan era.

Since moving in the early 1990s from communism to reformism she has identified herself as a democratic socialist. Davis is the founder of Critical Resistance, an organization working to abolish the prison-industrial complex......

THE ROAD TRIP

What do twentysomething women care about? What are their hopes, worries, and ambitions? Have they heard of feminism, and do they relate to it?

These are the burning questions that photographer Emma Bee Bernstein and I,Nona Willis Aronowitz, sought to answer when we hit the road on October 15, 2007, determined to discover how our peers viewed their lives as women. For several months, through dozens of cities, we drove across America in a Chevy Cavalier, photographing young women and finding out what was important to them. Remembering our feminist moms’ legacy, Emma and I also tracked down feminist pioneers like Erica Jong and Michele Wallace, as well as younger veterans like Jennifer Baumgardner and Kathleen Hanna, and asked them, “Where do you see our generation headed?”

Before we left, Emma and I bestowed a name upon our adventure: Girldrive.

Girldrive tracks a conversation between the next generation. It allows gutsy young women across the American cityscape to be seen and heard. It evaluates, through an intergenerational conversation, the current state of feminism and its many definitions. It’s about the past and the present, and it glimmers on the future. It’s about the promise of the open road. It’s about how young women grapple with the concepts of freedom, equality, joy, ambition, sex, and love—whether they call it “feminism” or not.

Off and Running

With white Jewish lesbians for parents and two adopted brothers—one mixed-race and one Korean—Brooklyn teen Avery grew up in a unique and loving household. Even so, she can't quell her curiosity about her biological African-American roots and decides to contact her birth mother. This choice propels Avery into her own complicated exploration of race, identity, and family that threatens to distance her from the parents she's always known. THE BAGS...please visist their site and learn more

http://www.thebags.org/History/index.html

Jon Hardy, Jim Janota, and Crispin Wood - all hailing from Lexington MA - formed The Bags in the summer of 1985. They unleashed their unique blend of hard rock and punk on the Boston club scene in September of that year.

In 1987 they recorded and released their debut album Rock Starve. Charles M. Young wrote about Rock Starve in Playboy (March, 1988): "The Bags (from Boston) fall somewhere among the Ramones, Husker Du, and early Kiss. Their debut, Rock Starve (Restless), consists of thrilling guitar-bash riffs that pound like the sound of a herd of giant woolly mammoths going over a cliff, just enough melody rasping though shredded vocal chords and lyrics wholly unbesmirched by any panty-waist college-poetry influence."

The Bags toured the U.S. in 1988.

In 1989, The Bags released their first single on Stanton Park (I Know / Hide And Seek). They also took top honors by unanimous vote, winning the 11th Annual WBCN Rock 'n' Roll Rumble. Later on that year they released an album on Stanton Park under one of their many aliases, Swamp Oaf. Byron Coley wrote about Swamp Oaf in Spin (February 1990): "This Boston trio (perhaps best known for their non-thug work under the name the Bags) have a sense of compositional burl most redolent of early/mid period Blue Cheer. The guitar quick-switches between ass-puddle wah-boom and overblown zorch-flash with Leigh Stevens-oid flair, and these guys don't get even close to the Zep cliche path most of their "peers" are treading.

In 1990 The Bags released their eponymous LP The Bags, again on Stanton Park. David Fricke...."( quoted from <http://www.thebags.org/History/index.html> on Saturday 6th of February 2010...)

THE KIDS + SUPERMUG

KONZERT
THE KIDS + SUPERMUG
Samstag, 17.04.2010 · 21:00 Uhr

"THE FEVERS
Samstag, 22.05.2010 · 21:00 Uhr

Saturday, October 31, 2009

Hi James,
I hope all is well.

After having shown the movie some of the kids in my community
criticized me because they felt attacked by me - and because they claimed I was creating racism by touching upon certain issues like
black invisibility in our local scene( and on flyers etc.) - and giving this absence of non-white people special attention.

Other people said that the movie changed their perception of black youngsters - usually you see black people on stage only.

The black pals I grew up with mostly got drawn into the R&B - Hip Hop Scene - however, I am sure that some of them are as much into punk and rock but might be too shy to come to a show (given the fact that they might get extra attention which they might not want. I need to find out).

And that is my personal point: people should not feel invited because they are black - but because they are curious an interested AND they should feel comfortable, welcome and at home. I asked one black guy who is much into punk and he said the biggest mistake people make is that they are afraid of asking the wrong questions and doing the wrong things this creates and adds a lot of tensions and some issues remain unadressed. I believe we actually should take an active approach.

Perhaps it is a bit of a weak analogy and self- centred - but as a woman I feel better around guys who have already been thinking a lot about sexism - they are usually less controlling, more sensitive and feminine themselves, and allow women to get more out of the box. And maybe the black kids I know might feel better when they know that people are more self-aware. Most guys I know are only gentlemen on the condition that you act as they see fit(->sex-centered standarts of evaluating social scenarios).
That is what I saw in White Lies Black Sheep: the kids were very controlling and they seemed to have a hard time letting go of stereotypes and letting him be just the way heeee wants to be and get out of the "MTV gangster rap" - box.

Mathew, the brother of the cypher lead singer, backed and supported me and I felt like okay - some people might react that way because I have touched a soft spot in them and
they don’t want to deal with it and thus deflect it( and make me the bad guy:-o)) - Mathew helped me to get back some of my self - esteem.

It is what you said in one of your interviews: some of your white friends deal with animal rights and sexism, homophobia - but they are not ready to deal with their own racist tendencies. It is true: we have animal right and queer activist here and I am the only afropunk activist- but it is the same with sexism: the jobs were not done by women only. Feminism is a mans job as well. And racism can only become overcome when everybody does his/her job.

What I believe should be done is to let people talk who are concerned and listen to them and exchange ideas. Your movie is brilliant because it gives people a voice who might have remained unheard.

I believe that it is relative whether it is special to be a black kid on a punk show. Given the fact that punk is rooted in Afro-American music and that it has heavily been influenced by black artists -it should not be something to write home about. However, if you experience yourself as an alien on a gig because you are the only black person - than this feeling of being "the only black in the scene" is valid, strong and very real. Creating an Afropunk community is the only way through which people can share and at the same time heal their emotions that were caused by feelings of isolation.

However, I have seen the white lies black sheep movie and I don´t believe that anyone in my town or in Stuttgart would react like the white kids in the New York movie. I am bewildered - to me it seems that the dialogue is so much based on a lack of contact between white and black indie kids. According to my personal experience it that people
who are not in touch with other ethnicities easily get confused.

Kind Regards,

Annabell
