Transcendentalism - American radicalism.

Ralph Waldo Emmerson:

Henry Thoreau
Thoreau did a 2 year long philosophical retreat into the Walden Pond (Boston) woods and developed theories that were antithetical to the emergence of urbanisation, rationalism, materialism, capitalism and the consequent destruction of natural surroundings. He was a transcendentalist who regarded universities as only on way through which one could aquire knowledge and truth. Thoreau´s assumptions are basically based upon intuition and intellectual far-sightedness.
