I feel like I spent most of my life trying to get women to realize that the success is not measured by their marital status. For years, women were led to believe that being a wife meant that you had achieved something special. I thought that our girls today were learning the exact opposite. I may have been wrong.


Yesterday I lectured at an all-girls' school. After our first class about why the word "slut" perpetuates the double standard, our second class period was devoted to a discussion about how technology affects our sexuality, sexual health, and our relationships. I said that there existed great opportunities as well as great challenges. (For the sake of this post, I will focus on only two aspects of our discussion.
)

First, I disclosed that as a teenager, I didn't have email, I-Chat, Facebook, or text messaging. I did, however, have an emergency car phone that was permanently attached to the car. That being said, my experience with adolescent dating was based upon calling a boy up on the phone, passing notes to him in science class, and telling him that I liked him -- in person. Nowadays, that doesn't really happen. Teens who rely on technology to communicate never get an opportunity to talk face-to-face. Or more importantly, if they get the opportunity, they rarely take it.


We wind up losing the (necessary) intimacy and vulnerability that is part of a relationship.
Remember when you actually had to call someone on the phone or knock on their door and meet their parents before picking them up for a date?

I fear that those of us who can only type our thoughts or feelings on some electronic piece of equipment will never be able to engage in an intimate relationship, because we don't know what it's like to feel vulnerable and try to avoid vulnerability at all costs. The computer screen always seems to protect us. If the object of our affection doesn't respond to a text or email we chalk it up to a SPAM filter or a network problem. When we do get a message or a text we can interpret someone's words in any way that pleases us. We never know if someone is being genuine.
(And no, those emoticons don't really tell us anything -- no matter how many smiley faces or LOLs someone types!)

Needless to say, my girls were not happy. "Why should we have to talk face-to-face if we have all these options?" Now, some of this has to do with their age -- fifteen -- but I explained to them that having tough conversations was part of being mature enough to engage in a relationship. And if they couldn't do that, perhaps they weren't ready for one. And that's okay, too.


But when we started to talk about their use of social networking sites, that's when things got interesting... and scary.


A girl raised her hand. "I have a friend who only wants to be able to write 'in a relationship' on her Facebook page." Many of the girls shook their heads in agreement. "I do, too," others added.


I cringed.
How is it possible that we still believe that our worth (or popularity) is dependent upon being "the girlfriend/wife/partner of so-and-so?"

While I like Facebook in many respects, I find the "Relationship Status" part completely juvenile, if not damaging. Why do we feel compelled to announce or define our relationships for everyone else? (There is already a part where you can write your interests i.e. dating, networking, etc.
) Why isn't it enough to define our relationship with our partner? Why must we formally legitimize our relationships for the greater public? Is it really anyone's business?

So of course, a student asked me, "Logan, do you have your relationship status on your Facebook page?" (Yes, I have a Facebook page.
)

I answered honestly.


No. I don't. Being an "Mrs." doesn't make me the person that I am. Being a sexologist, a Ph.D., contributing to my community, my work with children and teens -- those things make me the woman that I am. Being a wife is part of who I am, but certainly not the most important thing about me. And in the end, we are secure enough with our relationship that my husband doesn't need me telling everyone that I am formally attached.
We know it; who cares if anyone else does?

And therein lies the lesson for all of us: girls, women, boys, and men. We are more than the title at the beginning of our name. We do a tremendous disservice to ourselves when we forget that.

Hab das Heftchen im Ansatz durhgelesen und muss sagen, dass die VerfasserInnen schon ganz schön einen an der Waffel haben müssen.
Ich finds jedenfalls extrem lustig und roll mich meist vor Freude auf dem Boden.

Back to the roots

Viele Leute können es sich bei mir vielleicht gar nicht so recht vorstellen, aber als Teeny war ich in erster Linie auf Elektro, Hip Hop und Breakdance - Veranstaltungen unterwegs. Da Milena, meine neue Kollegin, nun mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit, mehr Verantwortung in Richtung Gitarrenmusik übernehmen wird, habe ich vor mich zunehmend auf meine musikalischen Jugendjahre zu besinnen und mich wieder mit bedeutungsschwangerem Rap und elektronischen Klangteppichen zu beschäftigen. Zudem ist es mir ein Ziel, mich noch tiefer in die HC- Punk un Doom Metal Sphären hinein zu graben. Was mich derzeit sehr fasziniert sind progressive Elemente bei Hörerlebnissen, die dazu führen, dass man geradezu sinnlich eintauchen kann(Radiohead - Kid A/ Cult of Luna).

Sowieso finde ich, dass Lieder in denen kein Gesang , Gebrüll bzw. kein Sprechgesang auftauchen auch etwas sehr ansprechend ansich haben -

Chapeau! Maria Raha´ s profound journalistic work deals with the oversimple public perception of both eccentric female artists and activists within the framework of Anglo- American cultural history. To analyze pop history, from a rather feminist point of view, it begs the question of whether males and females are being talked and written about differently by the press. Hellions asks why such renegades, outsiders and outriders, as Janis Choplin and Billy Holliday tended to develop self- destructive patterns of behaviour. Additionally, it elucidates why they were rather remembered for their tragic deaths than for their dogged and brave deeds. Raha, an outspoken feminist, does not only criticize the public images(cherry bombs) of actresses like Monroe, Page and Hepburn, but also sheds light on how the public personas of writers like Woolf and Plath were generally perceived and misinterpreted. Moreover, the journalistic work touches upon political institutions such as former First Ladies (Clinton and Roosevelt) and shows how the press was implicitly trying to batter against their self-esteems. Yoko Ono and Sinead O’Connor were punished by a large amount of fans for voicing their controversial political opinions (in Ono´ s case in particular Lennon’s adherents) and Raha provides us with a more incisive background analysis on their stories. The second last chapter focuses on the chronologic development of movie heroines and how Hollywood came to allow for more self- assertive role models. Last but not least, the book offers a deep insight into rebellious acts, contemporary pop culture, and means of mass communication.
All in all, this book is a hit for everyone who would like to gain more knowledge on pop culture´s rebel women. However, I have to warn you: Raha picked up a very elaborate linguistic style. To most average speakers of English it might be better to wait for the German version. Be that as it may, jump in the water is great!

* last academic year, Starbucks coffee was placed in Hallward Library
without any prior student consultation.
* there was a popular and persistent student-lead campaign to have the
Starbucks coffee replaced by a proper fairtrade supplier. This included
regular coffee stalls and a petition with hundreds of student signatures.
* The Students Union (which the University is supposed to listen to)
passed a motion condemning the presence of Starbucks on campus.
* A university-wide poll indicated that 56% of students would prefer a
proper fairtrade alternative, even if this were more expensive (which it
needn't be necessarily).
* Starbucks are a very large, unethical, non-fairtrade, multinational,
with a poor record on workers rights and environmental standards.
* Despite all of the above, the University authorities have not replaced
the Starbucks coffee in Hallward and are continuing to ignore student
opinion.
* The Universitys' failure to replace Starbucks is undemocratic and
unacceptable. Starbucks must be replaced with an ethical alternative as
soon as possible.

Janis Joplin and Dick Cavett

Most people will remember Janis Joplin as a "tragic heroin" that died from drug abuse.
However, there is far more to her bio than just her death that needs to be acknowledged in the light of her rebellion against male music rebellion that suppressed her as a woman.

Some quotes from Maria Raha`s book "Hellions- Pop Culture’s Rebel Women" (2008, Seal Press)

- She was an "outsider" and "outrider"(p.67).

- "It was Joplin’s utter fearlessness of being herself- a single, wild, uncontrollable, unapologetic woman in a pressure- cooker culture wincing at authentic difference- that made her contribution so startling and confrontational , and simultaneously such a challenge for her in her personal life" (p.65).
