Melbeatz - coole Frau

My exchange university in England

"NOTTINGHAM UNIVERSITY OCCUPATION TO DEMAND ACTION FOR THE PEOPLE OF GAZA
Last night, students at the University of Nottingham are occupied lecture theatre B62 of the Law and Social Sciences building on the University campus, to protest Israels' actions and demand urgent action from the University management. The occupation will not end until our demands are met by the University authorities.
Over the past four weeks, Israel has unleashed the might of its military against a defenseless population living in one of the most crowded places on earth. These attacks are ongoing and have now destroyed much of the infrastructure of Gaza and left thousands of civilians, including hundreds of children, dead.
The appalling Israeli attacks have cost the lives of over 1,300 Palestinians, injuring and maimed many thousands. Tens of thousands of civilians have been left homeless and displaced. Head of the UN Palestinian refugee agency in Gaza, John Ging, is now joining international calls for an investigation into the war crimes of recent action. Israel stands accused of using banned weapons such as phosphorus bombs, attacking medical facilities, including the killing of 12 ambulance men in marked vehicles, and killing large numbers of policemen who had no military role, amongst numerous other atrocious crimes.
Motivated by the escalating crisis in Gaza, University of Nottingham students have occupied space on campus and issued a set of demands to the University management calling for immediate action. We stand in solidarity with students at the School of Oriental and African Studies, the London School of Economics, King's College London, Birmingham, Essex Warwick, Sussex, Oxford, Manchester Metropolitan, Cambridge, Leeds, Newcastle, Queen Mary's, and Bradford Universities; all of whom have occupied parts of their Universities in support of Gaza.
This is a non-violent and inclusive protest. All at the University of Nottingham are encouraged to participate. During the occupation we will adhere to the same codes of personal conduct that are expected of us as members of the academic community. Any disruption to our peers' education is expressly against our wishes and we will respect the rights of others to disagree. Universities should be places where freedom of expression, debate and critical discourse are encouraged, and the student movement in the UK and internationally has a proud tradition of protest and solidarity actions against social injustice.
The occupied space has become a place for discussion, debate and education. There is food and drink; and we are organising lectures, talks, conferences and film screenings! The occupation is being coordinated on a consensus basis, with roles and tasks for everyone who wishes to be in some way involved. If you are interested in getting involved in a particular aspect, be it media work, food preperation, posters/fliers, coordinating or any other task, do head on down to B62!
We welcome all those who are concerned about the plight of the people of Gaza to come along and join us in this empowering action to work for peace and justice in Gaza. So, come on down! Join the occupation!

Kurzbeschreibung
Was passiert?

Buffalo Stance
Neneh Cherry
Who's that gigolo on the street?
With his hands in his pockets and his crocodile feet
Hanging off the curb, looking all disturbed
At the boys from home. They all came running
They were making noise, manhandling toys
That's the girls on the block with the nasty curls
Wearing padded bras sucking beers through straws
Dropping down their drawers, where did you get yours?

Gigolo, Huh, sukka?
Gigolo. Gigolo, Huh, sukka?

Who's looking good today?
Who's looking good in every way?
No style rookie
You better watch don't mess with me!

No moneyman can win my love
It's sweetness that I'm thinking of!
We always hang in a Buffalo Stance
We do the dive every time we dance
I'll give you love baby not romance
I'll make a move nothing left to chance
So don't you get fresh with me!

Get funky. Yeah Timmy.
Tell it like it is. Check out this DJ.

So you say you wanted money but you know it's never funny
When your shoes worn through and there's a rumble in your tummy
But you had to have style get a gold tooth smile
Put a girl on the corner so you can make a pile
Committed a crime and went inside
It was coming your way but you had to survive
When you lost your babe, you lost the race
Now you're looking at me to take her place.

Who's looking good today?
Who's looking good in every way?
No style rookie
You better watch don't mess with me

Smokin.' Not cokin.' Get funky sax
Looking good, hanging with the wild bunch
Looking good in a Buffalo Stance
Looking good when it comes to the crunch
Looking good's a state of mind
State of mind don't look behind you
State of mind or you'll be dead
State of mind may I remind you
Bomb the Bass...rock this place!
What is he like? What's he like anway?
Yo' man what do you expect the guy's a gigolo man
You know I mean?

No moneyman can win my love
It's sweetness that I'm thinking of
We always hang in a Buffalo Stance
We do the dive every time we dance
I'll give you love baby not romance
I'll make a move nothing left to chance
So don't you get fresh with me

No moneyman can win my love
It's sweetness that I'm thinking of
We always hang in a Buffalo Stance
We do the dive every time we dance
I'll give you love baby not romance
I'll make a move nothing left to chance
So don't you get fresh with me

Wind on my face, sound in my ears
Water from my eyes, and you on my mind
As I sink, diving down deep...deeper into your soul.

No moneyman can win my love
It's sweetness that I'm thinking of
We always hang in a Buffalo Stance
We do the dive every time we dance
I'll give you love baby not romance
I'll make a move nothing left to chance

Is Facebook Hurting Feminism?

"Is Facebook Hurting Feminism?
By Dr.
Logan Levkoff, Huffington Post
Posted on January 17, 2009, Printed on January 17, 2009
http://www. alternet. org/story/120524/

I feel like I spent most of my life trying to get women to realize that the success is not measured by their marital status. For years, women were led to believe that being a wife meant that you had achieved something special. I thought that our girls today were learning the exact opposite. I may have been wrong.

Yesterday I lectured at an all-girls' school. After our first class about why the word "slut" perpetuates the double standard, our second class period was devoted to a discussion about how technology affects our sexuality, sexual health, and our relationships. I said that there existed great opportunities as well as great challenges. (For the sake of this post, I will focus on only two aspects of our discussion.
)

First, I disclosed that as a teenager, I didn't have email, I-Chat, Facebook, or text messaging. I did, however, have an emergency car phone that was permanently attached to the car. That being said, my experience with adolescent dating was based upon calling a boy up on the phone, passing notes to him in science class, and telling him that I liked him -- in person. Nowadays, that doesn't really happen. Teens who rely on technology to communicate never get an opportunity to talk face-to-face. Or more importantly, if they get the opportunity, they rarely take it.

We wind up losing the (necessary) intimacy and vulnerability that is part of a relationship.
Remember when you actually had to call someone on the phone or knock on their door and meet their parents before picking them up for a date?

I fear that those of us who can only type our thoughts or feelings on some electronic piece of equipment will never be able to engage in an intimate relationship, because we don't know what it's like to feel vulnerable and try to avoid vulnerability at all costs. The computer screen always seems to protect us. If the object of our affection doesn't respond to a text or email we chalk it up to a SPAM filter or a network problem. When we do get a message or a text we can interpret someone's words in any way that pleases us. We never know if someone is being genuine.
(And no, those emoticons don't really tell us anything -- no matter how many smiley faces or LOLs someone types!)

Needless to say, my girls were not happy. "Why should we have to talk face-to-face if we have all these options?" Now, some of this has to do with their age -- fifteen -- but I explained to them that having tough conversations was part of being mature enough to engage in a relationship. And if they couldn't do that, perhaps they weren't ready for one. And that's okay, too.

But when we started to talk about their use of social networking sites, that's when things got interesting... and scary.

A girl raised her hand. "I have a friend who only wants to be able to write 'in a relationship' on her Facebook page." Many of the girls shook their heads in agreement. "I do, too," others added.

I cringed.
How is it possible that we still believe that our worth (or popularity) is dependent upon being "the girlfriend/wife/partner of so-and-so?"

While I like Facebook in many respects, I find the "Relationship Status" part completely juvenile, if not damaging. Why do we feel compelled to announce or define our relationships for everyone else? (There is already a part where you can write your interests i.e. dating, networking, etc.
) Why isn't it enough to define our relationship with our partner? Why must we formally legitimize our relationships for the greater public? Is it really anyone's business?

So of course, a student asked me, "Logan, do you have your relationship status on your Facebook page?" (Yes, I have a Facebook page.
)

I answered honestly.

No. I don't. Being an "Mrs." doesn't make me the person that I am. Being a sexologist, a Ph.D., contributing to my community, my work with children and teens -- those things make me the woman that I am. Being a wife is part of who I am, but certainly not the most important thing about me. And in the end, we are secure enough with our relationship that my husband doesn't need me telling everyone that I am formally attached.
We know it; who cares if anyone else does?

And therein lies the lesson for all of us: girls, women, boys, and men. We are more than the title at the beginning of our name. We do a tremendous disservice to ourselves when we forget that.

Back to the roots

GAZA: STOP THE BLOODSHED
With over 600 Palestinians and 11 Israelis killed and the death toll mounting daily as the Gaza offensive escalates, we urgently need to demand that world leaders take action to end the violence and protect civilians.

Sign the petition below calling for robust international action to achieve an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and take further crucial steps toward a fair and lasting peace in the Middle East -- we're already being heard, now our message and numbers signing will be published in the Washington Post (opposite) and delivered to UN Security Council powers this week:

Petition to the UN Security Council, the European Union, the Arab League and the USA:
We urge you to act immediately to ensure a comprehensive ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, to protect civilians on all sides, and to address the growing humanitarian crisis. Only through robust international action and oversight can the bloodshed be stopped, the Gaza crossings safely re-opened and real progress made toward a wider peace in 2009.

Buch Rezi

Hellions – Pop Culture’s Rebel Women
Author: Maria Raha
Publisher: Seal Press

“We are infinitely complicated women. Our images require as many layers as we ourselves contain” (Raha, 2008).
Chapeau! Maria Raha´ s profound journalistic work deals with the oversimple public perception of both eccentric female artists and activists within the framework of Anglo- American cultural history. To analyze pop history, from a rather feminist point of view, it begs the question of whether males and females are being talked and written about differently by the press. Hellions asks why such renegades, outsiders and outriders, as Janis Choplin and Billy Holliday tended to develop self- destructive patterns of behaviour. Additionally, it elucidates why they were rather remembered for their tragic deaths than for their dogged and brave deeds. Raha, an outspoken feminist, does not only criticize the public images(cherry bombs) of actresses like Monroe, Page and Hepburn, but also sheds light on how the public personas of writers like Woolf and Plath were generally perceived and misinterpreted. Moreover, the journalistic work touches upon political institutions such as former First Ladies (Clinton and Roosevelt) and shows how the press was implicitly trying to batter against their self-esteems. Yoko Ono and Sinead O’Connor were punished by a large amount of fans for voicing their controversial political opinions (in Ono´ s case in particular Lennon’s adherents) and Raha provides us with a more incisive background analysis on their stories. The second last chapter focuses on the chronologic development of movie heroines and how Hollywood came to allow for more self- assertive role models. Last but not least, the book offers a deep insight into rebellious acts, contemporary pop culture, and means of mass communication.
All in all, this book is a hit for everyone who would like to gain more knowledge on pop culture´s rebel women. However, I have to warn you: Raha picked up a very elaborate linguistic style. To most average speakers of English it might be better to wait for the German version. Be that as it may, jump in the water is great!
